week 16: starting a blog

This blog was a by-product of one of my new year’s resolutions for 2010 - to feed my creative instincts. After several bouts of post-delivery illness and a little too many post-partum hormones I felt a little stuck inside my mind and looked for positive ways of shaking myself out of the shell. On days when I was home bound thinking about and writing my blog entry was a real treat. I particularly relish co-writing posts with a friend, so PLEASE, volunteer to write an entry for this blog.

As it turns out, blogs and parenting go hand in hand. It’s particularly true of mothers and blogs, and I suspect it has something to do with the isolation one can experience when interacting with pre-verbal beings all day long! As you know, I’m particularly interested in parents who try hard to combine parenting and career, so here is my pick of blogs in that category.

A feminist activist

Margot Magowan’s Reel Girl: Margot blogs almost daily about media for children. She reviews books, films and popular media and helps unsuspecting parents spot cliche and misogyny. Margot has had an impressive career as a radio producer, feminist non-profit leader and writer. Her main focus in the past 6 years has been raising her three children. Yet, within months of starting her blog she was solicited by the SF Chronicle to run one of their front page blogs. I find this to be a very inspiring example of persistence and smart ways of blending your responsibilities to combine parenting and personal success.

Margot is particularly astute at pointing out ways in which childhood stories and myths reinforce a second class citizen view of women and rob girls of many dreams and aspirations. She started her blog 6 months ago with an amazing post on kids and food - read on.

A father with amazing building skills

A dear friend of mine with a great eye for detail showed me this blog: a father who makes amazing creations for his children, thus showcasing his aesthetic and design abilities. In doing so, he’s basically advertising his designer’s talents while having a lot of fun with his children.

A celebrity

This may come as a surprise to some of my readers, but I read Gwyneth Paltrow’s Blog. I particularly like her posts on alternative health (she knows all the acupuncture, meditation, massage super stars and she interviews them) and on how to dressĀ  to combine fashion and practicality.
